PIANIST PIERS LANE TO OPEN
ST. CROIX CONCERT SERIES
Flamboyant socks, flamboyant playing

The St. Croix Concert Series will launch its 2010-2011 season with a concert by Piers Lane, a London-based pianist specializing in the music of Chopin. A world-class musician with “infallible fingers and unflagging energy,” Lane is also an author, lecturer and BBC contributor. And he’s eccentric. One critic exclaimed, “… once seated at the piano, [Lane’s] socks, striped in several glowing colours, could be seen. His flamboyant playing was much more in the spirit of his socks! The audience was completely bowled over by Lane’s performance and enthusiastically cheered and applauded him at its conclusion. Lane’s playing of the extended solo introduction was dazzling and set the tone for his entire performance.”
Lane’s performance will focus on the waltzes, ballads and sonatas of Chopin.
Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students.

JUST DO IT

This workshops is designed to help students overcome the fear of painting, to get the beginner started and to advance the intermediate student. Each participant will work individually and receive instructions suited to their skill level. This class will encourage development of the student’s personal style at their own speed. Valuable skills in getting your drawing on the canvas, painting techniques, color mixing and composition will be taught to students in a manner that they can understand and at a level they will be able to achieve in class and at home. Students are invited to work on a piece already in progress or to bring a blank canvas and a fresh idea to start something new.

An extraordinary play opened at Festival Theatre and runs through the 21st in Festival’s new first floor performance space, the Elbow Room. “Nickel & Dimed” is based on the New York Times bestseller by the same name, a non-fiction title of investigative journalism by Barbara Ehrenreich that chronicles events from the spring of 1998 through the summer of 2000. During those months Ehrenreich went undercover, gaining first hand knowledge of the life of low wage workers by becoming one.

Ehrenreich’s experience revealed low-wage America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity, along with a thousand desperate strategies for survival. Her book was instantly acclaimed for its insight, humor and passion.

A holiday concert that looks at unique aspects of Christmas and winter. Featured with the choir will be the sounds of Sarah Grudem on harp, David Livingston on recorder, and the narration of David Horstmann.
