The Warden’s House Museum was built in 1853 as the residence of the Minnesota Territorial Prison warden. Over the next six decades, there were thirteen wardens that lived in the house until 1914 when the prison moved to its present site in Bayport. After 1914 a Deputy Warden or Superintendent of the prison used the old Warden’s House. In 1941 the State of Minnesota sold the house to the Washington County Historical Society and it was opened as the second house museum in the state in June 1941. The museum consists of 14 rooms decorated in the late 19th and early 20th century style. Many rooms are like that of a upper middle class household while other rooms house exhibits showcasing Washington County history such as the lumber industry, the 1965 St. Croix Valley Flood, and of course, the Old Stillwater Prison.   [less-]

Gallery One, Atrium, and Lobby: In This Place: What makes a place holy? In This Place is a multi-faceted exhibition exploring the question "What makes a place holy?" Its focus is on the lands of the Qur'an, the Torah, and the Bible, from ancient times to the present, and on the multiplicity of ways people experience these placed as holy. The artists come from three religious traditions: Hend Al-Mansour is Muslim, Susan Armington is Christian, and Sylvia Horwitz is Jewish. The overarching aim of the exhibition and related programs is to bring together the community of Hudson and, more broadly, the St. Croix River Valley to explore ways we experience something as holy and reflect on how these experiences impact who we are and how we relate to one another. Galleries Two and Three: Minnesota Mosaic Guild Established in 2004, the Minnesota Mosaic Guild (MMG) was formed to promote the art of mosaic, foster exploration and experimentation in the media, provide educational opportunities in mosaic, and share and celebrate the diversity of experience and knowledge in the media. MMG members emerge from a multitude of artistic backgrounds, including sculpture, art instruction, jewelry making, graphic design, and oil painting. Riverview Gallery: Brian Stewart "A writer once referred to me as a visual raconteur because my paintings attempt to share with the viewer a unique story, a special place or feeling. My paintings often depict the everyday, the ocerlooked or the under-appreciated, subjects I've always been attracted to, like the scene or genre of painters 100 years ago." Overlook Gallery: Jennica Kruse "My sculptures tell stories from my own life and stories I collect from friends, family, and coworkers, as well as new stories that resonate with me. Through the process of carving and sculpting, I create a link for viewers to connect with these stories. In some way, I think my pieces connect strangers to each other, and provide a glimpse of a new way to see the world." [less-]
