Are you going to let a little bit of snow and freezing temperatures keep you indoors?! Of course not! We're Minnesotans!

January is the perfect time for an Ice Cream Social! The Washington County Historical Society (WCHS) will hold an old-fashioned ice cream social at downtown Stillwater’s Lowell Park’s Amphitheater, on the St. Croix riverfront.

With FREE ice cream from Leo's Malt Shop, you won't even notice those cold gusts of wind off the riverDon your warmest winter wear and join us in helping continue this fun (but admittedly a bit silly) Stillwater tradition!

Root beer will be furnished by Lift Bridge Brewery for root beer floats and the coffee will be from River Moon Coffee. This event is also sponsored by Discover Stillwater. The ice cream is free to everyone; there will be a nominal charge for the chili. Coffee will also be provided & chili will be available for a nominal fee.

Past to Present
Back in 1950 Stillwater businessman Gib Larson of Snowland Foods as well as other business people held the first winter ice cream social at the St. Croix Boom Site. Even though the temperatures were well below zero more than a thousand people came out and enjoyed the ice cream and the season. The event was moved to Lowell Park the next year and later it moved to Lily Lake. The event was sponsored at that time by the Jaycees and eventually faded away like winter into springtime.

“This event brings together our history and the community,” says Brent Peterson, Washington County Historical Society Executive Director. “What a great way to celebrate the place where we live, enjoy our neighbors, have fun with all the snow and eat ice cream to boot!”

The event is free to the public and donations to the Washington County Historical Society will be accepted. For more information please call the Historical Society at 651-439-5956 or visit www.wchsmn.org.
