The paintings of Jan Hopkins Furness and the pottery of Jeff Wilson share an affinity that can be seen in the reflections of water, the shapes of clouds in the sky and the synergy between their displayed art works at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center at Freedom Park. Please join us for the free opening celebration of this exhibition on Friday, August 4 from 5-7 pm. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibition will be available for viewing Mondays through Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM and Sundays from 12 PM to 5 PM through August 27.  Free admission and parking. Jan Hopkins Furness: Water, Clouds and Reflections Growing up in rural southern Wisconsin, living on a mountainside in upstate New York, having a home overlooking the Mississippi River south of Prescott and appreciating photographic images taken by my husband, I have been inspired to paint water, clouds and reflections. Having no formal art education I appreciate the support and kind critiques of the artists of The Little Colony Art Group of Prescott with whom I have painted for the last year and a half. After retiring from a professional career I am following my passion.   Jeff Wilson: I like to create functional stoneware with the occasional dabble into Raku. However there are still the moments where caution goes to the wind and something strange is created. Cone 6 stoneware with electric firing is mostly how things happen in my studio. I create my own glazes for the most part as well (which can lead to some interesting results). Unless otherwise marked, all my glazes are food/microwave/dishwasher safe.   [less-]

An equinox is a day with equal amounts of day and night. Spiritually, the equinoxes signify the cycle of life and the opportunity of rebirth. At ArtReach St. Croix, e-qui-nox is an exhibition featuring artwork that show balance and symmetry (monoprints by Beth Dorsey), a rebirth of materials and a connection to nature (fiber sculptures by Barbara Reigel Bend), and the seasonal cycle of nature (vestments by Michaela Mahady). Beth Dorsey creates monoprints that explore the tension between structure and intentionality, as well as randomness and spontaneity. She repurposes everyday objects and patterns to form the foundations of her images, which are obscured and enhanced by the layers added on top of them. Dorsey’s method highlight’s the structure, routine, and patterns that form the underpinnings of modern life. Barbara Riegel Bend is a fiber artist and sculptor whose work explores the interplay of cross cultural fabrics stitched side by side with a reconfiguration of contemporary “throw away items.” These found items are attached to her pieces in a repeating pattern, which creates rhythm and design that is reflective of the recycled materials used in the work. Michaela Mahady has background both in art and architecture that are reflected her detailed, hand knit vestments created to reflect the seasonal changes found at the equinoxes and solstices. Mahady’s work is inspired by a continuing exploration of the relationship between the individual and the environment. An artist reception will take place on the Autumnal Equinox, Friday, September 22 at 6-8pm. [less-]

The Children's Hour is an emotional drama, written by an under-produced playwright.  The play's first Broadway production, which opened in 1934, was a success with critics and audiences, and the story was later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Shirley MacLaine and Audrey Hepburn.  The story takes place in an all-girls boarding school and follows the destruction wrought by an angry student's false accusation that the school's two headmistresses, Martha and Karen, are engaged in a love affair.  This must-see production, which concludes Festival’s summer season, will feature showcase roles for local youth performers. The gallery at the Stillwater Public Library will host an exhibit featuring Virginia Lovness Paintings and Prints: A Retrospective in July and August 2017. Virginia is a longtime resident of Stillwater. In the 1940s, young Virginia Lovness drew models wearing the kind of lovely dresses she had always longed to have. These fashion drawings and others earned her a scholarship to Hamline University where she studied art while her skills were put to use in posters and school promotions. Expanding her interests to landscapes and eventually, non-objective paintings, prints and sculptures, she sold her pieces at early art fairs and to friends who admired her work. She once traded a large canvas for a pink Cadillac convertible. Virginia met and married Don Lovness in 1948 and they began a creative partnership that lasted over 50 years. It was Virginia’s initiative and drive that brought them to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954 with a request to design a painting studio for her. Over the next several decades they built two Wright homes by hand, and became self-taught connoisseurs of fine Asian and Pre-Columbian art. This exhibit honors the works of Virginia Lovness from her high school years to the art she produced in the 1950s and ’60s in her Frank Lloyd Wright-designed studio. Meet the artist and discuss her work at a lovely evening reception on Thursday, July 20 the Stillwater Public Library from 6-8 p.m. The event is free and no registration is necessary. [less-]

[less-]
