The warm tones of fall are richly embedded in the works of both Casey Beck and Mary Opatz Herges. The work takes us from one season to another as nature changes colors and wraps us into the next season.

Mary is a landscape artist that captures light, color, and mood. She feels that landscapes are a perfect vehicle for expressing human emotion. She uses an abstract brush to create landscapes that are inexplicable, withdrawn, and unknowable. She feels that “when things cannot clearly be seen they can often best be felt.”

Casey creates utilitarian vessels that he hopes will also create a dialogue between user, process, material and self through a series of recollections. Again we are dealing with art and emotion. Casey suggests that “with the everyday use of a vessel, past memories are recognized, all while the user forms their own memories with the vessel. These memories accumulate and form a relationship between vessel and user.”

As we anticipate fall, stop by the gallery which is very COVID-19 prepared … only 10 people in the gallery all wearing masks with attention to cleanliness at all times. This show will enrich your experience and help you personally transition into the next season. If you wish to see it virtually, it will be posted on our website: seasonsonstcroix.com.

[more+]

Specimens reflects the themes of Minnesota-native, author and paleobiologist Hope Jahren’s memoir LAB GIRL. The exhibition brings together the work of ceramic sculptor Jenn Angell and the embroidered botanical illustrations of Karen Gustafson.  Angell’s work is self-reflective and preserves emotions and traumas the way a scientist preserves a specimen. Gustafson’s delicate, floating botanicals harken back to an era of documentation and observation before mass spectrometers and DNA sequencing used today.

Jenn Angell (Minneapolis, MN) is a 2017 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where she majored in ceramics and minored in painting and psychology. She says, “Clay remembers. It gets stretched, pushed, pulled, scarred. My work is about the heavier side of the human condition and how things manifest and are contained in the physical body. The body becomes a container for these traumas, a storage space for the weight of the unconscious.” Angell’s ceramic pieces are primarily constructed with slabs and coils with sculptural elements added on. They are fired in atmospheric kilns. Angell’s recognizes how, “the intensity of the firing complements the intensity of the concept.”

Karen Gustafson (Minneapolis, MN) has her studio in the Northrup King Building and is part of the annual Art-A-Whirl events in mid-May. Her work weaves together an interest in art, science, textiles, plants, food, and health. Gustafson was inspired by research into ancient medicinal plants of the original Vienna Dioscorides herbal (512 AD) which contains the oldest surviving complete manuscript of Dioscorides’ pharmacopoeia.  She says, “These plants create a connection to this ancient text, linking past to present.  I use thread, translucent organza, and a sewing machine to create ethereal plant portraits.  Floating away from the wall, they cast a secondary shadow drawing.” Gustafson has a MFA, University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a BFA and Art History Minor, University of Minnesota.

Celebrate the opening of Specimens: art, science and the human condition on Thursday, August 20 from 6-8 PM. The show will be on view through September 26, 2020.

For the sixth consecutive year, ArtReach St. Croix has been awarded a prestigious grant to host NEA Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.  NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Exhibit Title: "LOCAL F(L)ARE"

This new exhibit from Jeff Davis highlights the Minnesota and Wisconsin area, including its wildlife, landscapes, sunrises and sunsets, and the unique texture of its history. Jeff's art will be on display at the Visitor Center from Sept 8th through Oct 30.

Bio – Jeff Davis
After 40 years in engineering and an interest in photography, Jeff started shooting with passion in 2013. A majority of his photos are shot in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Areas of interest include landscape, wildlife, the sun (rising/setting) and old stuff. However, if something looks interesting and his camera is near it usually gets captured. Early mornings take him and his gray van on the usual route east of Prescott with the hope of capturing the sunrise. 5:30 AM is early but there is nothing like it. Jeff’s daughter, Emily (#fivebyfive – Instagram), creates extraordinary pottery, which he is fortunate enough to shoot. Some of those photos have been published both in a regional and national magazine.

Jeff shares these comments:

“I don’t live in an area with mountains or crashing ocean waves. However, when posting photos on line, people express often, “what a great place to live.” Indeed.”

“My wife likes to travel and I’m OK with it as long as I can take my camera. Most days are good days with a camera in hand.”

“I’ve shot plenty of poor quality photos to get to where I am today.”

“My barber lets me hang a new photo on the wall of his shop each time I get a cut. So far, I haven’t received a free cut but I’m still working on it. Hope you enjoy the show.”
