March and April are typically spring break months. We find ourselves dreaming of palm trees or desert landscapes where the warmth of the sun can thaw us from outside, in. During this intergenerational class, we will:

Reflect on and map our own personal migrations during the course of our lifetime while simultaneously considering the journeys birds take during their lives.
Discover the basics of migration: how, why, and where?
Forecast bird migration through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology BirdCast website
Realize the hazards and obstacles birds face by participating in a migration simulation
Gain insight into the latest technology scientists are using to study bird migration
Go birding!!

Your instructor will provide the following:

Nature journal for each participant
Snacks
Bird-friendly coffee (already ground)

Students are asked to bring:

Binoculars (optional, but preferred)
Insulated coffee mug (optional)
Smart phone with the following apps downloaded ahead of class (optional, but preferred)
Merlin
e-Bird
Warm layers for being outside and insulated, waterproof boots

Age Requirement
Students between the ages of 8-12 can attend for free with a registered adult. (There is no need to register the child – just email [email protected] to let us know who you are bringing.) Students ages 13-15 can register with another registered adult. Students aged 16-17 are welcome to attend with written permission from a parent or guardian by email to [email protected].

Skill Level
Beginner birders welcome! This class is for all birding levels, especially beginning birders.

NOTE: Be aware we may cancel class if a minimum number of registrations is not reached. We work to balance teachers’ need to plan for a class with students’ busy schedules — not an easy task. Please register as early as possible!

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is a trove for spectacular Pinot Noir that exhibit nuanced differences from one place to another depending on soils, winemaking philosophy, and clone. But this isn’t all the Willamette has to offer. From coastal, crisp whites, to barrel-aged chardonnays and funky natural wines, this region has a whole other side so many of us miss!

We want to take you through the history, geography, and geology of the wondrous Willamette Valley and explore how place impacts Pinot with a few classics we love from 3 different parts of the valley. We will also taste you on a few other major grapes (and a couple oddballs) from producers who are shaking up the image we have of this area as consumers begin to learn of this region's next frontier for wine. Willamette is so much more than Pinot (even if we love them!) -- they are home to so much diversity, creativity, and collaboration.

Manger in Bayport will be hosting So What for this one, so if you decide you want to stay on for a fantastic dinner, be sure to make some reservations. You will get a complimentary glass of wine with your meal.

It also is a great class for those who have crocheted many years ago and need a little encouragement to get back into it.

First, you learn about the best hooks and yarn and then you work on a simple square pattern of single crochet stitches that you can be made into a dishcloth, hot pad, or cup cozy. Cara helps students troubleshoot any issues and learn to make those perfect edges. Once the basic stitch is understood, students may move on to other stitches and projects.

Materials that are supplied:

Cotton blend yarn
Crochet hook
Stitch markers
Printed pattern

Age Requirement:

Students ages 10 and older may attend this class. Ages 10-15 must register with another registered adult.

About the Artist:

Hello! I’m Cara. I started my career as a features writer for newspapers and magazines, but eventually realized I wanted to expand my work into my lifelong passion for crafting. I have always been inspired by my crafty and thrifty grandmother, Mary Marie Mason, who taught me how important it was to take time out to make something with your hands. Now I design patterns, teach classes, and sell my handmade items.

In my knitting and crochet classes, my goal is to build confidence in beginners by starting with chunky knit projects you can finish in one class. Once you’ve mastered that project, you can move on to smaller and smaller needles and yarn. I love the moments when it clicks for students.

More fun facts: I grew up in Kansas, then lived in Des Moines, IA, Boulder, CO, and the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Saint Paul, MN with my husband, Mike. We have two great kids, Harper and Max.
